Physician and Medical Director, Hospice and Palliative Medicine 

The Medical Director, Palliative Medicine and Hospice shall be responsible for the facilitation of the operations and projects of the Palliative and Hospice programs of Mary Washington Healthcare in provider and administrative roles to maximize the clinical and educational use of these programs. The Medical Director will provide consultation for palliative and hospice patients, and work in collaboration with attending physicians to manage complex symptoms and pain. Serving as a key advisor to physician leadership, related medical committees, Palliative and Hospice Teams, the Medical Director provides ongoing development and review of related policies and procedures.  

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Provide medical direction on a 24 hour, seven day a week basis for the care and treatment rendered by Palliative and Hospice Programs. 
  • Consult with attending physicians regarding Palliative and Hospice policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Participate in the Interdisciplinary rounds and perform consultative visits as indicated across hospitals.
  • Provide the additional duties of Face to Face encounters as required by CMS when Nurse Practitioner(s) unable to perform.
  • Serve as the reporting physician of record for Nurse Practitioner(s), Palliative.
  • Assist in development of policies and protocols to develop standards of Palliative and Hospice patient care, in conjunction with the department management.
  • Consult with the attending physician, as requested, regarding pain and symptom management.
  • Consult with the attending physicians to assure a continuum of medical care in the event that the attending physician is unable to respond to the care needs of a patient or is unable to retain responsibility for a patient’s care.
  • Collaborate with the Palliative and Hospice team regarding consultations for Palliative and Hospice needs.
  • Review and certify eligibility for Palliative and Hospice Services in accordance with program policies.
  • Serve as a medical resource to and member of the Hospice Interdisciplinary Team through telephone consultation and presence at Hospice Interdisciplinary Team Conferences.
  • Work closely with the Palliative and Hospice Coordinator, Hospice Manager and Home Health and Hospice Director to promote and maintain continuity of care, assure quality of care and compliance with program policies and procedures as well as Federal and State Regulations.
  • Formulate an annual work plan that improves the quality, efficiency and resource stewardship of the Palliative and Hospice Programs in collaboration with the assigned Executive and Manager.
  • Review with the department manager incidents related to patient care and operations and provide appropriate follow up to incidents as needed.
  • Evaluate the performance of physician services in Palliative and Hospice Care.
  • Assist in development of the annual budget by recommending and coordinating requests for new equipment, supplies and other materials.
  • Participate in the provision of educational programs conducted by the Hospital or Hospice for personnel and perform teaching and other functions with the Hospital or Hospice as necessary to assure the Hospital and Hospice’s compliance with the requirements of the Joint Commission or other licensing or accrediting body.
  • Serve as liaison with other departments within Mary Washington Healthcare, the medical staff and nursing service regarding all aspects of care in Palliative and Hospice Care by attending appropriate Mary Washington Healthcare and Medical Staff meetings and serving on designated committees.
  • Be responsible for departmental implementation of actions taken by and policies of the Medical staff Executive Committee as well as Bylaws and Rules and Regulations of the Medical Staff.
  • Advise in Mary Washington Healthcare planning activities relevant to the Palliative and Hospice Care Programs.
  • Abide by policies, rules and regulations of the Hospital and Hospice.


  1. Doctor of Medicine with two (2) years’ experience beyond board certification is required. 
  2. Physician must be licensed to practice in Commonwealth of Virginia with full credentialing required
  3. Board certified or eligible in Hospice/Palliative Medicine or equivalent experience.
  4. 1-year experience working as part of an interdisciplinary team is required 
  5. Current Virginia medical license and in good standing with medical board.
  6. Technology skills with comfort in working in various clinical and operational computer applications strongly preferred
  7. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, written and verbal; required.
