NP or PA Trauma and Surgery

he Advanced Practice Provider (PA/NP), under the direction of their Supervising Physician, provides and coordinates direct care to patients requiring General Surgery (both Elective and Emergency General Surgery), Surgical Critical Care, and Trauma Surgical Services.  The PA/NP will provide care to patients in the ER, the OR, the surgical wards, and the surgical ICU.


The PA/NP job functions include, but are not limited to:


  • Obtain, record, and dictate medical histories and physical examinations
  • Make daily rounds, record progress notes, write routine orders (comfort and diet, laboratory tests, non-invasive examinations)
  • First Assist during surgery (laparoscopic, open, and robotic surgery)
  • Participate in trauma resuscitations
  • Evaluate patients who require a surgical consult
  • Dictate discharge and transfer summaries
  • Apply and change surgical dressings
  • Prepare patients for discharge from the hospital
  • Educate patients and family regarding disease, procedures, medications, nutrition, health care and post-discharge care
  • Perform/assist minimally invasive procedures (skin suturing/stapling, simple I&D, skin biopsy) 
  • Perform critical care procedures per protocol (central line, arterial line, chest tube thoracostomy)
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests (labs, xrays, CT scans)
